September 11th Remembrance at the Brevard Veteran's Memorial Center

Tabling for FSU CSW at the VMC 9/11 Memorial

The Brevard Veteran's Memorial Center (VMC) hosted a commemorative event on the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2021, hosting a variety of organizations to honor those who lost their lives and the survivors of the 9-11 attacks.

The victims and survivors include active service members, veterans, firefighters, law enforcement, first responders and other rescuers who risked, and sometimes lost, their lives to save others after the terrorist attacks on the twin towers, the Pentagon, as well as those in the plane headed toward the Capitol building.

At the VMC event, organizations tabled and shared information about their services, alongside food, music, and a memorial service for those who lost their lives. The Florida State University College of Social Work tabled to share information about opportunities with the college, including scholarship opportunities for Brevard residents and veterans interested in studying social work. College of Social Work MSW student and assistant Lara Klopp represented the college to share these opportunities with event attendees and her experience with the program.

The scholarships for Brevard veterans at the FSU College of Social Work result from the generosity of Brevard County, Florida, residents Guy and Delores Spearman. The Spearmans have combined their passions for Florida State University, Brevard County, and serving military service members. Recognizing the mental health crisis currently endured by our nation's veterans and military members, the Spearmans established the scholarships because they believe that veterans are uniquely able to address and assist with fellow veteran and servicemember mental health needs.

The Spearmans also support the FSU College of Social Work through other scholarships and initiatives, including the CSW Arts and Athletics Program. They serve on the College’s Leadership Board, and on the Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families and Children Advisory Council. Since 2006 Guy and Delores have helped over 130 students from Brevard receive their social work education from FSU College of Social Work.
