Lynn Kiefer, FSU College of Social Work MSW alumnus, and a member of the Brevard Network, is making news as she works to expand St. Francis Reflections' NorthStar Program. Having started in the NorthStar Program as the Child Grief Coordinator last October, Lynn has expanded the scope of the program and greatly increased the number of children receiving services, to over 100.
Space Coast Daily recently featured the program and its first-ever summer carnival here.
The NorthStar program brings counselors together with children and adolescents (aged 4 - 18), by providing peer support groups, community outreach, and monthly family days. Movie night, Brevard Zoo, Summer Carnival, and a big Holiday party are some of the “Family Day” activities. There are day camps, holiday parties, and movie fests. Children work through their grief using art, journaling, stories, play, group discussions, and compassionate listening. These services are all funded by donations and are completely free to Brevard children and families.
Additionally, the program has anticipatory bereavement support, helping children and families prepare for the loss of loved ones. Grief education is provided to staff in the local schools, and support groups to students. NorthStar offers "free consultation, education, support groups and information to schools, service providers, faith communities, businesses, and other organizations seeking to support children and families experiencing grief and loss."
