There's no question that COVID has wreaked havoc on so many different areas of life, large and small. On the smaller side, but still disappointing, was the COVID-related cancellation of the first Brevard Network meeting in July. It was scheduled to be an informal gathering at a local restaurant, an opportunity for members to put faces to names, reconnect with old classmates, and meet fellow FSU Social Work alums. Later will come the work of deciding what service projects we will undertake to give back to Brevard and how we as a group will undertake continuing education opportunities. First and foremost, however, was connection.
In the five months since the idea for the Brevard Network was born, a lot went on behind the scenes to bring it to fruition. At first, the Network grew slowly, one person here, another there. Adding the Facebook group helped, with its discussion boards and instant messaging capability. Members reached out to friends who joined, and the group has continued to grow. It now stands at 40 members, 26 of whom are in the Brevard Network Facebook group. The first gathering was timed to ensure that everyone could receive their vaccination beforehand, and the vaccinated could meet indoors without masks.
Unfortunately, Florida is experiencing yet another COVID surge, and safety precautions are once more taking the fore. Hospitalizations are rising rapidly, and masks are once again recommended for everyone inside. Our first meeting will be held - but it'll be outside, where everyone can feel safe. More on that will be coming soon. While we have yet to meet in person, we are all still here to support and encourage each other. So if you're a graduate of FSU and a social worker, and you live or work in Brevard, reach out. We'd love to have you join us!
