Special Olympics 2023 State Surfing Championship

Surf Athletes begin their season in April, training with their coaches for two months before local competitions take place, culminating in the State Championship in August. This year, nearly 100 athletes were competing over the two day competition. Check out photos of the competition here.

Along with catching waves, athletes were also encouraged to stop by the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes tent, where they could be evaluated by the Fit Feet Initiative's podiatrists and receive education on foot health. At the end of the competition on Saturday, nearly two-thirds of all athletes visited the tent.

That Saturday, I signed up to be a volunteer, and was assigned to help with shoe size measurements at the Healthy Athletes tent. I got to meet many of the athletes and learn about how important foot health is. I also learned that Special Olympics Florida has a team of medical providers who help to provide free healthcare screenings to athletes at their events throughout the year.

There are lots of ways to get involved with Special Olympics Florida, including becoming an athlete, coach, or volunteer. If you’re a Brevard local, consider volunteering at next year’s State Surfing Competition in Cocoa Beach or at the upcoming Fall Classic held in November at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. I had a great experience meeting the athletes and learned a lot about what Special Olympics Florida does!
